Some giveaways are about prizes. This one was about warmth, comfort, and showing rescue sighthounds that a whole community is cheering them on.

Over the past few weeks, we invited our social media community to nominate a sighthound rescue for a special donation of coats and jumpers. The idea was simple, but it came from a very real need. Greyhounds, whippets, lurchers, salukis, deerhounds, and other sighthounds often feel the cold more than many breeds. Their lean bodies, fine coats, and sensitive nature mean a well-fitting coat or jumper can make a chilly walk, kennel day, or foster home settling-in period feel much easier.

What happened next was genuinely heart-warming. Nominations came in with stories, thanks, memories, and clear affection for the rescues that work so hard for these beautiful dogs.

And now, after gathering nominations and votes, we are delighted to announce that The Southern Sighthound Rescue has been chosen as the winner of our coat and jumper giveaway.

Why this giveaway mattered

Sighthounds are special dogs. Anyone who has lived with one knows the mix well: elegance, speed, softness, silliness, and a remarkable talent for finding the warmest spot in the house.

Many arrive in rescue after big life changes. Some are retired from racing or working backgrounds. Some have been surrendered through no fault of their own. Some need time, patience, medical care, or help learning what home life feels like. Rescue teams and foster carers often step in at the most uncertain point in a dog’s life.

Coats and jumpers may sound like small things, but for sighthounds they can make a real difference.

They can help:

  • Keep dogs comfortable during cold walks

  • Support dogs who feel the chill in kennels or foster homes

  • Help newly rescued dogs feel settled and cared for

  • Make outdoor toilet breaks easier in poor weather

  • Give foster carers and rescue teams useful everyday items

For a dog waiting for a home, comfort matters. A warm coat on a frosty morning is practical, but it is also a quiet message: you are safe, you are cared for, and better days are coming.

That was the heart of the giveaway. We wanted to offer something useful, but we also wanted to shine a light on the rescue groups doing steady, compassionate work behind the scenes.

How the nominations brought the community together

When we opened the giveaway on our social media channels, we asked people to nominate a sighthound rescue they felt deserved a donation of coats and jumpers.

The response was full of feeling.

Every nomination told a quieter story too. It showed how many people are connected through rescue.

There were adopters, foster carers, volunteers, supporters, walkers, donors, and people who simply love sighthounds and want them to be safe. Some had first-hand experience of a rescue’s work. Others had followed from afar and wanted to give back in a small but meaningful way.

That sense of shared support made the giveaway feel bigger than a donation. It became a celebration of the people who wash blankets, drive dogs to appointments, answer messages, assess homes, soothe frightened newcomers, fundraise, and keep going when the work is demanding.

Every nomination mattered. Every vote helped lift up a rescue. Every comment reminded us how much kindness exists in the sighthound world.

Rescue often begins with somewhere safe to rest.

The giveaway gave us a chance to see that support in action.

A comment, a share, a vote, and a nomination may feel small on their own. Together, they created something strong enough to send real help where it is needed.

The Southern Sighthound Rescue is our winner

We are so pleased to share that The Southern Sighthound Rescue has been chosen as the winner of our coat and jumper giveaway.

The rescue received wonderful support throughout the nomination and voting process. People spoke warmly about the care, commitment, and compassion shown to sighthounds in need. Their supporters clearly value the rescue not only for the dogs they help, but for the thoughtful way they do it.

The Southern Sighthound Rescue works with dogs who may need a soft place to land before they can move on to the next chapter of their lives. Like many sighthound rescues, that work is not only about finding homes. It is also about understanding each dog as an individual.

Some dogs need confidence. Some need medical attention. Some need time to decompress. Some need help learning about stairs, sofas, toys, traffic, or being left alone for short periods. Some simply need the right person to see past the nerves and recognise the loving hound beneath.

That kind of care takes patience. It takes foster homes, volunteers, transport help, fundraising, home checks, and ongoing support. It takes people who notice the small details, such as whether a dog is warm enough, relaxed enough, eating well, sleeping deeply, and beginning to trust.

The donation of coats and jumpers will support that everyday care. It will help keep dogs comfortable while they wait, recover, settle, explore, and begin again.

We are honoured to send this donation their way.

A win for one rescue, and a thank you to all

While The Southern Sighthound Rescue is the chosen winner, this giveaway also reminded us how many rescues deserve recognition.

Every nominated rescue was put forward because someone cared enough to speak up for them. That deserves its own moment.

Behind every sighthound rescue name is a team of people trying to help dogs through uncertain moments. Some are managing urgent intakes. Some are caring for long-term residents. Some are matching sensitive dogs with carefully chosen homes. Some are helping adopters through the first weeks after adoption, when small reassurance can make all the difference.

Rescue work is rewarding, but it is rarely easy. It continues in bad weather, during busy seasons, and when funds are stretched. It carries emotional weight, especially when dogs arrive frightened, poorly, or misunderstood.

That is why public support matters.

Not everyone can adopt. Not everyone can foster. Not everyone can volunteer regularly. But many people can do something.

Support can look like:

  • Donating clean coats, blankets, leads, or food when a rescue asks for them

  • Sharing adoption posts so more people see waiting dogs

  • Offering transport or practical help if the rescue needs it

  • Volunteering time for walks, events, admin, or fundraising

  • Choosing adoption or fostering when the time is right

  • Sending a small donation when funds allow

  • Speaking kindly and accurately about rescue dogs

Small acts add up. They help rescues feel seen, and they help dogs move closer to safety, comfort, and home.

Why community support means so much

The giveaway began with coats and jumpers, but it quickly became about connection.

Sighthound people know the feeling. That first lean against your legs. The nose tucked under a blanket. The burst of speed across a field, followed by a dramatic nap. The slow transformation of a nervous dog who realises that hands can be gentle and homes can be safe.

These dogs leave a mark.

Many people who nominated a rescue did so because they had been touched by that kind of story. Maybe a rescue helped them meet a dog who changed their home forever. Maybe they saw a frightened hound blossom in foster care. Maybe they followed a long-stay dog’s journey and celebrated when the adoption post finally came.

Stories like these matter because they keep compassion visible. They remind people that rescue dogs are not broken. They are individuals with histories, needs, quirks, and enormous capacity for trust when given the right care.

The Southern Sighthound Rescue received this giveaway because the community showed up for them. That support is powerful. It says the work is noticed. It says the dogs matter. It says rescue is not something done by a few people in the background, but something many of us can stand behind.

Share your rescue story and keep the kindness going

To everyone who nominated, voted, commented, shared, or quietly cheered from the sidelines, thank you.

You helped turn a giveaway into something meaningful. You helped celebrate the work of sighthound rescues. Most of all, you helped send warmth to dogs who deserve every bit of comfort we can offer.

We would love to hear your own sighthound rescue experiences. Perhaps you adopted a retired racer who now rules the sofa. Perhaps you fostered a nervous lurcher who found confidence one tiny step at a time. Perhaps a rescue supported you through your first weeks with a new hound. Perhaps you volunteer, donate, transport, or simply follow along and share posts when you can.

Your story might encourage someone else to adopt, foster, donate, or learn more about these wonderful dogs.

Please keep supporting sighthound rescues wherever you are. Follow them, share their appeals, respect their adoption processes, and offer help in ways that fit your life. If you can give time, give time. If you can give funds, give funds. If you can give a warm coat, a blanket, or a kind word, that matters too.

Congratulations again to The Southern Sighthound Rescue, and thank you to every rescue and supporter who took part. The coats and jumpers are on their way with a great deal of love behind them.
