OUR STORY
Greyt Sweaters has been a registered business since 2014, however the passion for designing and making our houndwear began in a much smaller way back in 2002.
Elaine adopted a rescue whippet called Lucy, and being as knitting was a much loved hobby she decided to design and knit Lucy a sweater. It was apparent that there was a very limited availability of knitted sweaters for whippets to purchase, and indeed a gap in the market for any suitable well fitting coats for their needs.
Elaine was very involved as a member of a sighthound rescue chat forum online, so began posting photos of Lucy wearing what was becoming a vast array of sweaters.
Other members began asking if she could also make them for their hounds!
Elaine then donated a sweater to a greyhound rescue auction, and the winner just happened to be a professional photographer. This lady was so over the moon with the sweater that she took some amazing photos of her greyhound Jazz wearing her prize, and offered to help provide photos in the future with Jazz and her other hounds as models.
By now the hobby had become a full time venture. Elaine began making and selling the sweaters on Ebay, having taught herself how to make her designs on an electric knitting machine. This not only produced them quicker, but also made the finish and look of the sweaters so much more professional.
Over a short amount of time however, it was obvious that one person couldn't possibly keep up with demand! By now also Elaine had also adopted greyhound Millie, who was not only a total sweetheart but a perfect model and tester of new designs.
The next 3 years were spent trying to source a trusted supplier that could produce them in bulk, and also to establish the possibility of providing other designs of both indoor and waterproof coats.
By September 2014 Greyt Sweaters was an established and trusted brand, providing knitted sweaters, fleece housecoats, quilted jackets and lightweight waterproofs for Greyhounds, Lurchers and Whippets. We are to this day so thankful that such a success was born out of the adoption of Lucy whippet and an idea to make her a knitted sweater.
supporting rescue communities
Giving back is at the heart of Greyt Sweaters.
We proudly support rescue organisations by donating slight seconds and sample coats to hounds in kennel environments, helping provide warmth and comfort where it is needed most.
We also contribute coats to fundraising auctions and, whenever time allows, make and donate beds for kennel housed hounds.
